This year I am working with REACH Edmonton to offer two unique workshops for frontline workers, counsellors, chaplains, and other care providers who serve Muslim clientele in Edmonton.
These are:
- Understanding Muslim Mental Health: An Introduction to Islamic Culture and Well-being (March 24, 2020)
- Supporting Your Muslim Clients: An Introduction to Culturally-Inclusive Care (June 30, 2020)
While both workshops aim to provide care providers with essential knowledge about Islam and Muslims, “Supporting Your Muslim Clients” focuses on culturally-inclusive counselling and care-providing practices with Muslim clientele. Participants will not only gain a better understanding of Muslim demographics and current social issues in Edmonton, but also learn about the most highly-recommended approaches for the care of Muslim clients through the instructor’s first-hand experience and published research.
“Understanding Muslim Mental Health” will focus on essential aspects of Islamic beliefs and practices as they pertain to mental health and wellbeing. Participants will be introduced to terms and conceptions that are relevant for understanding mental health from an Islamic perspective. Participants will also receive an overview of local Muslim demographics (in Edmonton), available resources, and gain a better understanding of the role of the imam and the mosque within the life of the community.
